For the uninitiated: #IStandWithBaharMustafa

#IStandWithBaharMustafa is a twitter hashtag originally created in April 2015 to promote support for a student diversity officer who became the centre of a racism row after asking white people not to attend an anti racism event.

The hashtag started trending six months later after Mustafa was charged with sending threatening communications, including sending a grossly offensive message via a public communication network (#killallwhitemen).

The majority of people tweeting the hashtag championed free speech whilst acknowledging the idiocy and irony of Mustafa’s actions and situation.

Goldsmith University’s Diversity Officer became famous earlier this year for, amongst other things, announcing that it’s not possible for people like her [a woman of colour apparently] to be sexist or racist “because racism and sexism describes structures of privilege based on race and gender and women of colour do not stand to benefit from such a system.”

#NoWhitesOrIrish(UnlessURSamanthaMumba) apparently.

Her eyebrow raising tale of sexism, safe space sister solidarity and supposed support for cis gender genocide is mostly noteworthy because of the various double standards that it highlights….

Double standards that become obvious when you consider the behaviour of some people paid to be ‘equality champions’…

Double standards from many feminists who claim to champion free speech…

Double standards in the way Goldsmith University react to allegations of sexism…

Double standards in the media…

And of course double standards from Mx Mustafa’s employer who have supported her unreservedly…

Every student must have an equal opportunity to participate in all Union activities, and although this may seem obvious, it’s sometimes hard to be inclusive of everyone when we are all so different. Goldsmiths SU Equal Opportunity Policy

Be prepared to challenge hateful, discriminatory, or oppressive language. GSU recognises discrimination can occur wherever it is not consciously challenged. Goldsmiths SU Safe Space Policy

Still as insane as this story is, I guess the sanest reaction is to simply laugh at it.
