For the uninitiated: Hipster racism

Hipster racism (or ironic racism): Involves someone using overtly racist behaviour or language in an attempt to appear controversial, edgy or knowingly ironic.

The term was coined by race blogger Carmen Van Kerckhove in 2006 to describe the modern media phenomenon of using irony and satire to mask racism.  Examples cited, included controversy arising from someone attending “hipster” parties dressed up as ‘blackface Jesus’ and Gwen Stefani’s harajuku girls ‘art project’.

Hipster racism should not be confused with Hipster Sexism,

 Ironic Sexism or Hipsister Sexism.
