For the uninitiated: Hipster Sexism

bros

Hipster sexism (or liberal sexism) is “the objectification of women but in a manner that uses mockery, quotation marks, and paradox”.

Informed by the concept of ‘hipster racism’, the term was coined by writer Alissa Quart in 2012 in her article The Age of Hipster Sexism.  It is rooted in the idea that sexism is a thing of the past, thereby making the demonstration of ‘classics sexism’ tropes ironic.

Like Hipster Racism, Hipster Sexism is a distancing gesture, a belief that simply by applying quotations, uncool, questionable, and even offensive material about women can be alchemically transformed. Alison Quart

Quart provides an example from an episode of the HBO show Girls where the male protagonist calls his sister a ‘skank‘ and asks her if she is ‘Getting that pussy pounded?”  She goes on to clarify that hipster sexism is usually a bad thing but acceptable (nay excellent) when Lena Dunham does it.

Hipster sexism should not be confused with Ironic Sexism or

Hipsister Sexism.
