for the uninitiated: #blameonenotall

#Blameonenotall is a hashtag and media campaign created primarily to promote positive images of men by encouraging women to stand in solidarity with men by holding signs saying that not all men should be blamed for the crimes of a small proportion of society.

The campaign was created by an Indian Media Company to counter perceptions that all men are rapists or actively oppress women.

It was immediately attacked by western women’s rights activists on social media and in some UK mainstream media outlets who interpreted it as essentially rewarding men for not being rapists.

Such intolerance for the promotion of positive messages about men is indicative of a phenomenon encapsulated by the development of the #notallmen trope.

Initially co-opted by woman’s rights activists who perceived the term as an attempt to shift the focus of their discussion instead of engaging with it.

Increasingly it is also used to mock and derail any attempt  to shift the focus of 21st century discussions about gender equality into a narrative that addresses the needs and experiences of both sexes.
